CHAPTER 9

I couldn’t stop myself from blowing a raspberry at him and laughing. Fated mate? Marriage? Me, a wife? The notion sounded so ridiculous, I couldn’t help but laugh. What else was I supposed to do? Believe him?

“I think you’re getting a little ahead of yourself there,” I said. I wasn’t trying to offend him. I understood wolves had a completely different culture than witches and mages and even the Fae. But knowing you were going to marry someone upon first looking at them sounded ridiculous and impossible, not to mention… insane.

However…

I swallowed, because even though my brain thought this whole thing was a joke, my body said differently. My hands were clammy and my heart was beating too fast as everything clicked into place within me like a final puzzle piece. As crazy as it sounded, me being a wolf shifter’s ‘mate’ almost made sense.

Who was I kidding? If I teased away the marriage and craziness, it did make sense. To a degree. It was difficult for me to even think about, if I was being honest, but I forced myself to. I forced myself to tease it out and to try and understand it.

Always feeling like I didn’t fit in with my family, the witches and warlocks. Aunt Alison’s premonition. The intense attraction and feelings that I’d experienced since meeting Christian which were unlike anything I had ever felt before in my entire life. Maybe it made more sense than my brain wanted to admit.

Christian stared at Oliver.

“It can’t be possible,” he said, but then he hesitated and tilted his head to the side. “Can it? She’s a full blood witch. Not to mention, the daughter of the most powerful warlock in all the realms.”

Oliver laughed, then covered his mouth with a flare and twist of his wrist. “Won’t your family be proud?”

Christian growled at Oliver and a shiver ran up the back of my neck.

There was a strange threat in that, that I didn’t understand.

“What’s wrong with me?” I asked, swallowing hard against the lump of emotion in my throat.

“Nothing at all,” Oliver said with a wink and a flourish of his hand. “You’re beautiful, and intelligent, and part of the most powerful family this side of the universe.”

“And his family doesn’t like… witches?” I asked.

This was all happening too fast. I rubbed my sweaty palms on my thighs, hoping to do it in a way that was subtle so they didn’t realize just how nervous I was. The crazy thing was, I had no idea why I was even nervous in the first place. I still hadn’t wrapped my head around the fact that this was actually the truth even if it made sense. Then again, why did it feel like I was constantly contradicting myself?

“Though this is a moot point since we aren’t even dating yet,” I added.

Dating. I wanted to laugh, even though the situation itself wasn’t funny.

Oliver grinned. “Not yet. But fated mates are rare and important not to keep apart,” he said, his tone taking on a seriousness I didn’t expect from him.
